VOLVO XC60 CONCEPT MOVIE
The engine offers the driver dynamic performance in the form of 265 horsepower and 251 lb-ft (340 Nm) of torque – with emissions of fossil carbon dioxide dropping by up to 80 percent when driving, compared with the same engine running only on gasoline.
Through this concept vehicle, Volvo hopes to shed some of the stodginess associated with the brand, and inject more emotion–without compromising their image as a builder of safe cars. Said to be close to the look of the production model, the five-seat XC60 concept is smaller than Volvo’s midsized XC90 SUV. Volvo says the XC60 will combine the sportiness of the new XC30 coupe with more cargo capacity.
The Volvo would assemble the XC60 with already proven gasoline- and diesel-burning engines. It integrates both the unmistakable, muscular XC-versatility and the sporty charisma of a coupe. Further, the XC60 would share technology with the Land Rover Freelander of 2007, using a modified version of the Ford C1 platform. The XC60 Concept is an auto show preview of the production XC60, which also provides an indication of a new styling and design direction for upcoming Volvo vehicles. It includes a glass roof and a newly styled grille, with a much larger Volvo symbol, new shifting mechanism, mechanical tail gate, and 20 inch rims. The tail section is particularly impressive with tail lamps that cascade down from the corners of the roof and with a clever glass tailgate that can be opened any of three ways: full open, top section open or lower section open.
Its interior design that is as daring as the exterior. This is most evident in the instrument panel and center stack and the slim, visually floating front and rear seats. The interior is dominated by the elegant combination of saddle leather and aluminum. The upper section of the passenger compartment is typically Scandinavian light, while the lower portion has a contrasting dark, espresso brown shade. The main instrument pod has a new steering wheel harmonize with the iconic floating center stack, which is angled towards the driver.
The classic Volvo iron mark was reintroduced on Volvo’s cars almost two years ago and makes its boldest design statement yet on the Volvo XC60 Concept. Embedded in the trapezoidal grille, the large iron mark provides a distinctive signal that the future has arrived. The new angled positioning lights on both sides of the grille are also part of the DNA of Volvo’s next-generation design language. Along with the headlamps and the sweeping front fenders, they radiate an aggressive stance that also emphasizes the hood’s classical V-shape.
Another exciting solution is the dark panel in the lower part of the tailgate. Viewed from inside, it becomes transparent to improve the driver’s ability to see the area behind the car. The roof is also transparent, with dark-tinted glass attached on top of a Y-shaped bearing structure. At the rear, the Volvo name on the tailgate features more pronounced lettering with wider spacing than before. This too is a new feature that will be echoed throughout the model range to boost the brand’s image.
Another feature that definitely will go into production, and perhaps even before the XC60 reaches the market, is the City Safety technology showcased on the concept. Like active cruise control, this radar-based system can apply the Volvo’s brakes to maintain a safe distance between it and the vehicle ahead on the road, to the point to bringing the Volvo to a full stop if needed.
Between 2007 and 2009, the segment’s sales volume is expected to expand by 75 percent to 443,000 cars. As with the recently introduced Volvo C30, Volvo’s XC60 project is aimed at a specific target group with high demands on design, brand value and high-tech solutions in their choice of lifestyle products. This generation is very tech savvy, is becoming increasingly influential and is building up immense purchasing power. When it comes to their choice of car, these consumers adopt the same approach as they apply to other products; it should preferably cater to all their needs in one attractive, smart package. Volvo is among the leaders in pushing the automotive flex-fuel envelope.
Going on sale in 2009, Volvo’s first entry into the highly competitive and rapidly growing compact off-roader market will line up against established models such as the BMW X3, Land Rover Freelander and Toyota RAV4, plus Ford’s forthcoming Focus SUV.
The target market for the compact Swedish luxury SUV will be consumers who always regard the microchip as a natural complement to their breakfast cereal, postulates Volvo. Consumers who have grown up in an era during which electronic products have undergone unimaginable development will be the early adopters of this vehicle believes Volvo, largely because of its various technological advancements.
Volvo’s XC60 will be an important model for Volvo, and could become one of its best-selling models as we shift towards the end of the decade, and especially if Volvo and parent company Ford can ensure the price is competitive and standard features are bountiful. Pricing will be slightly higher than the second generation Land Rover Freelander.
No precise price was mentioned for the Volvo XC60, but we know it will be put on sale on spring 2009 with an expected price $35,000
Volvo has been producing safety centered cars for the past 80 years and the company’s name is synonymous with road safety and safety systems integrated into their cars. And today, the company is making another step towards providing cars safe not only for the occupants but also for the environment. The Volvo XC60 will use bio-ethanol for fuel to minimize the fossil carbon dioxide which is heavily damaging to the environment. The concept shows that harmful emissions are reduced by 80 per cent than those engines using gasoline only for fuel. This eco-friendly fuel will not only be good for the environment but using it will also not decrease the car’s performance.
The step towards protecting the environment is one of the major concerns of all governments globally so a mass produced green car will be much welcomed. Car manufacturers can expect a large buyer base for cars such as this because of the fuels lower price than the non-renewable fossil fuels. Add to that the performance level of the cars using cleaner fuel and you will have a product that will surely receive much praise and awards and achieve sales record.
The Volvo XC60 Concept Car:
“It is time to once and for all forget all about boxy Volvos. Instead, we will make our Scandinavian design heritage more emotional and radiant by adding sculptured, exciting shapes and new, innovative features,” says Steve Mattin.

This is a video I took, in March of ‘07, of me cold-starting my car. It’s a 1984 Volvo 240 DL, but it’s the ultra-rare diesel edition. Volvo made VERY few of these cars, and they did so only for a short period (four or five years out of the 240 series’ 20 year run).
The engine is an inline 6-cylinder diesel, made by Volkswagen/Audi. Volvo purchased the diesel engines from VW and used them, instead of making their own. Go figure.
This car is in showroom condition…probably the only one on the east coast. It starts right up, as you can see in this movie.
This engine is actually really fast and powerful, unlike most diesel cars. It accelerates just as fast as my Audi did.
Enjoy!
